Understanding carrier dimensional weight policies is critical for managing shipping costs. This page provides up-to-date information on fuel surcharges, DIM divisors, and policy changes from major parcel carriers.

Why DIM Weight Matters

Dimensional weight (DIM weight) pricing means carriers charge based on package size, not just actual weight. A large, lightweight package may cost more to ship than a small, heavy one because it takes up more space in the truck or aircraft.

The Formula

DIM Weight=(L × W × H)÷DIM Divisor
Billable Weight=MAX(Actual Weight,DIM Weight)

Where L, W, H are in inches and the result is rounded up to the nearest pound.

How to Use This Page

  • Fuel Surcharges: Check current rates before quoting shipping costs
  • DIM Divisors: Use for accurate shipping cost calculations
  • Surcharge Thresholds: Identify packages that may trigger additional fees
  • Policy Timeline: Stay informed about upcoming changes

Fuel surcharge percentages change weekly (and even more often during volatile fuel markets). This page is reviewed regularly and verified against each carrier's own published rate sheets — but always confirm the exact current rate on the carrier's site before quoting a customer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do carrier DIM policies change?

Major carriers typically update DIM divisors and surcharge thresholds during their annual General Rate Increases (GRI) in January. However, fuel surcharges change weekly, and carriers occasionally make mid-year policy adjustments.

What's the difference between FedEx Express and Ground DIM divisors?

FedEx uses 139 for both Express and Ground domestic shipments. However, international shipments may use different divisors, and negotiated rates can include custom divisors for high-volume shippers.

Do these policies apply to negotiated rates?

The divisors shown are standard published rates. Enterprise shippers with negotiated contracts may have different DIM divisors, typically ranging from 166-250 depending on volume and package profile.

Why does USPS have a 1 cubic foot threshold?

USPS only applies DIM pricing to packages exceeding 1 cubic foot (1,728 cubic inches). Smaller packages are charged by actual weight only, making USPS advantageous for compact, heavy items.
